Robert Timm’s Italian Espresso style coffee bags distills all the
complexities of the coffee making process into an effortless, tea-bag
style affair. Inside each of the little bags was about two spoon fulls
of french-press grind, robusta coffee unknown origins: It’s a nice
blend, but I found the recommended steep time to be a little short for
the flavour I’m used to from an espresso style coffee.
If you’re a fan of the glossier mouthfeel good espresso gives, maybe
give these a pass: A lot of the lovely oils are caught by the bag, and
because the coffee was ground long before you stuck it in your cup,
you’re forfeiting any kind of crema that you’d usually find in this
style of drink.
Additionally, I didn’t like having to squeeze the bag to get the most
flavourful drops into my cup, nobody likes wet fingers. I also didn’t
find specific water amounts: something that’s incredibly important when
brewing coffee, especially espresso, where ratios matter most.
Overall I’d say it’s a direct step up from instant coffee, but temper
expectations. If you really crave a glossy, rich espresso, this will
miss the mark for you.
